No matter what the industry says, organisations large and small are migrating at least some of their workloads from on-premises to public clouds, which begs the questions: is this the right thing to do and just how secure is the public cloud?
Companies first need to evaluate their workloads and determine if the data should be migrated to a public cloud based on multiple criteria, factor in the issues that relate to security policies and exercise caution – as with any network system configuration.
For some reason, organisations tend to worry too much about the public cloud (more often than not), perhaps still due to the novelty of this particular cloud model, or the uncertainty around highly skilled security expertise servicing the cloud. In the latter case, it is about the troubleshooting that counts: dealing with misconfigured networks, poor patch processes, or system errors.
However, the public cloud approach enforced by Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud or Amazon’s AWS not only provides sufficient security protocols but makes use of specialised staff and automated updates and processes focused on stable data and app protection.
Public cloud security has evolved to meet the growing demands of the enterprise and remove any scepticism, but it is clear that companies need to understand and assume certain shared responsibilities that come with this chosen cloud infrastructure model – for both cloud vendors and business users. Not doing so could prove costly in the long run.
